The big head-shaker in Hollywood this week is the buzz surrounding possibly moving Oscar night to January in 2012. The Governors of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences apparently discussed the idea at a Tuesday meeting this week, most likely as a defensive move against the seemingly ever-expanding number of movie awards shows that have popped up and stolen Oscar's thunder in recent years.
After all, if you've already seen George Clooney on five awards shows, do you really have to tune in to watch him again come Oscar time? The shift, though, would throw the entire Hollywood calendar into a tizzy, since studios commonly wait until the final weeks of December to release some of their biggest awards-hopefuls.
That would have to change so Academy members could see the films and get their nominations in by mid-December at least. On the other hand, the Golden Globes would likely get trampled to death in the ensuing chaos. So some good might come of it. Next year's Oscars are slated for Feb. 27. Who's doing what?
