No, we're not talking about musician/celebrity father Billy Ray Cyrus, this is Billy Ray - AMPAS member, primarily a screenwriter, but also director of Breach and Shattered Glass previously. Deadline reports that Ray is attached to direct an English language remake of last year's Best Foreign Language Oscar winner The Secret in Their Eyes (or El Secreto de Sus Ojos in Spanish) for Warner Bros. The movie originally comes from Argentina and was directed by Juan José Campanella. Ray also wrote the script for this remake after writing The Hunger Games adaptation for Lionsgate. Another great foreign film being remade? Not again.
The Secret in Their Eyes is about a retired prosecutor who writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past particularly brutal unresolved homicide cases and his unreciprocated love for his superior - both of which still haunt him decades later. I've heard nothing but amazing things about it, and considering it beat out my top pick - Un Prophete - at the Academy Awards, I'm sure that it's probably pretty damn good. This is yet another film in Hollywood's trend of remaking great foreign language flicks for the hell of it, following Let Me In and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. As always, let's hope Billy Ray can put his own unique spin on this instead of just making the same movie again without subtitles. Anyone big fans of the original?
